Link Between A Bad Diet And Depression

I'm sure many followers of the WAP or GAPS diet already know about the connection between a bad diet and depression. For newcomers though I write this post about the affect of diet on your mental health. A diagnoses of depression is becoming ever more common in this country while conventional doctors only offer up potentially dangerous antidepressants as the treatment for this mental disorder. But diet does play an important role in the development of depression (along with many other mental health problems). First, of all a lack of vitamin B complex can lead to a deficiency, neurons miscommunicate from toxin overload and lack of fat, and glycation process resulting from consumption of sugary foods leading to free radicals that destabilize the brain. Your brain is actually made up of fat, especially saturated fat and omega-3s, so a lack of healthy fat in the diet and glycation process can lead to mental instability over time.

In a recent study, it was shown that fast food consumers have a 51% chance of developing depression compared to people who don't consume fast food. Even small quantities of fast food were shown to raise the risk of  developing depression. This finding is in agreement with the fact that trans fats (found in most fast food) is not the kind of fat that the brain depends on for good health as it depends on healthy saturated or polyunsaturated fats (olive oil, etc.). Of course, the ill affects of consuming fast food can be due to the high sugar content as well since this leads to insulin spikes and glycation process. Another study finds that depression and heart disease may be linked to the consumption of trans fats thus showing that the two diseases may have a common nutritional link. The consumers of trans fats had a 48% more risk of developing depression than those who didn't consume as much trans fats.
